Apply for a Temporary Identity Card (Personalausweis)

Personalausweis vorläufig beantragen
Machine translation of the German page, 2026-09-15. The German original is binding.
Has your identity card (Personalausweis) already expired or been lost? You can apply for a provisional identity card if you need an identity card immediately for a specific occasion. The provisional identity card is primarily a substitute document for temporarily meeting the requirement to hold valid identification. Its validity is up to 3 months. If you plan to travel abroad at short notice, we recommend applying for a passport instead, since a provisional identity card is generally not sufficient for entry into other countries (exception: some EU countries).
