Report the sale of the motor vehicle or trailer

If you have sold your motor vehicle, you are obliged to notify us. Please report the sale as soon as possible, for your own protection. Please note: You must continue to pay tax for the vehicle • until the new owner has re-registered it in their own name, or • until it has been taken out of service. Instead of "außer Betrieb setzen" (taking out of service), the terms "stilllegen" (decommissioning) or "abmelden" (deregistering) are also used. For more on the topic "Taking a motor vehicle out of service," see "Further information." Please do not forget to also notify your motor vehicle insurance company of the sale. The Zulassungsbehörde (vehicle registration authority) does not forward such notification to the insurance company on your behalf. Tip: To make sure you no longer have to pay tax and insurance premiums for the vehicle, you can take it out of service yourself before selling it.
