Motor vehicle - Applying for a short-term license plate

• The vehicle must be known to the registration authorities (Zulassungsbehörden), i.e. it has a type approval or individual approval (Typ- oder Einzelgenehmigung). • If an operating permit (Betriebserlaubnis) cannot be produced, use of the short-term license plate (Kurzzeitkennzeichen) is restricted to journeys connected with obtaining an expert report (Gutachten) for acquiring the operating permit (type approval or individual approval), to a testing station (Prüfstelle) in the registration district at the vehicle's location or a neighbouring registration district, and back. • An overview of the neighbouring registration districts can be found under "Further information". • Valid proof of the HU (Hauptuntersuchung, main inspection) / SP (Sicherheitsprüfung, safety inspection) (expiring after the end of the short-term license plate's validity) must be provided. • If valid proof of the HU / SP cannot be provided, use of the short-term license plate is restricted to journeys to obtain the HU/SP at a testing station in the registration district at the vehicle's location or a neighbouring district, and back.

The fee (Gebühr) is based on the Gebührenordnung für Maßnahmen im Straßenverkehr (fee schedule for measures in road traffic) in its currently applicable version and amounts to 13.70 EUR in the most favorable case.
