Noise in the home and neighbourhood

Household and Neighbourhood Noise (Haus- und Nachbarschaftslärm) General information Household and neighbourhood noise is what is known as behaviour-related noise, since it is caused directly by human behaviour. This includes, besides loud conversations, playing musical instruments or singing (Hausmusik, music-making at home) and playing loud music through audio equipment. Noise from animals is generally also classed as household and neighbourhood noise. In the interest of a good neighbourly relationship, a conversation with the person causing the noise can often provide a quick remedy and avoid conflict. Likewise, the landlord or the responsible property management company should be informed about the noise disturbances. The Schiedsperson (mediator) responsible for the relevant residential area can also help settle the matter. You also have the option, during the office hours of the Ordnungsämter (public order offices), of calling on the staff of the Allgemeiner Ordnungsdienst (AOD, general public order service) for help with noise disturbances, and at night and on Sundays and public holidays, the police of the responsible precinct (Abschnitt). This allows the responding officers to restore quiet and, if necessary, file a report against the person causing the noise.
