Register the birth of a child

• The child is born in a Berlin hospital or birth center (Geburtshaus) The institution (the hospital or the birth center) reports the birth to the responsible Standesamt (registry office) and forwards the birth notification (Geburtsanzeige) in this case. • or: The child is born at home (home birth) In this case, midwives, obstetricians, and doctors issue the birth certificate (Geburtsbescheinigung). This must then be submitted by the parents to the responsible Standesamt (registry office). • if applicable, deadline: 1 week If the child is born at home, the parents must report the birth to the responsible Standesamt within one week and submit the birth certificate (Geburtsbescheinigung). • Documents in German • If the required documents/certificates are not in German, they must be translated by a translator sworn in (beeidigt) in Germany (see "Weiterführende Informationen" [Further information]). • For some countries, an additional authentication (Überbeglaubigung) (apostille or legalization) is also required. The apostille (issued by the responsible home authority in the country of origin) or the legalization (issued by the German embassy) must be affixed directly to the original or attached to it (more under "Weiterführende Informationen" [Further information]). • For certificates originally issued in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, or Cyrillic, the translation of personal names (such as first names, surnames, birth names) must be carried out in accordance with the transliteration standards (ISO 9-1995 / ISO 843 / DIN 31634 / ELOT 734 etc.). • Original documents All required documents/certificates must generally be submitted to the responsible Standesamt in original form. Certificates must not be altered and/or perforated/laminated.

• Notification of the birth • either the institution (the hospital or birthing center) submits the birth notification • or the parents submit the Geburtsbescheinigung (birth confirmation) within one week (in the case of home births) • if applicable, declaration by both parents regarding the child's first name(s) and family name (signed) (under "Forms") • The Namenserklärung (name declaration) can also be made informally, but must be signed by both parents. • You can also obtain the form for the Namenserklärung (name declaration) at the hospital, birthing center, or at the Standesamt (registry office). • If the institution (hospital or birthing center) submits the birth notification, the Namenserklärung (name declaration) is often already included. • valid Personalausweis (identity card) or passport of the parents • birth certificate of the mother • if applicable, birth certificate of the father • if applicable, marriage certificate • if applicable, Vaterschaftsanerkennung (acknowledgment of paternity) Required if such a declaration has been made and the two parents are not married to each other. • if applicable, Sorgeerklärung (declaration of joint custody) Required if such a declaration has been made and the two parents are not married to each other. • if applicable, proof of the dissolution of the marriage If the child's mother is divorced or widowed, the marriage certificate and proof of the dissolution (dissolution note on the certificate, a legally binding divorce judgment, or a death certificate) are required. • if applicable, presentation of a Vollmacht (power of attorney) The completed certificates can also be handed out upon presentation of a power of attorney. Relatives in the direct line (grandparents/parents/children) receive the certificates even without a power of attorney. • if applicable, further documents This list is not exhaustive. Further documents may be required. If one or both parents hold a nationality other than German, it is advisable to seek advice from the responsible Standesamt (registry office) regarding the required documents and the use of family names.

The birth of a child must be reported (notified) to the Standesamt (registry office) of the place/district of birth. The parents' place of residence is not decisive here.
