Birth abroad - Apply for subsequent registration (Nachbeurkundung)

Geburt im Ausland - Nachbeurkundung beantragen
Machine translation of the German page, 2026-09-15. The German original is binding.
Registration of the Birth of a Person with German Citizenship Abroad, on Request, in the German Birth Register (Nachbeurkundung / subsequent registration) – provided a domestic residence exists or has existed. If you or a close relative were born abroad, you can apply for the subsequent registration of the birth in the birth register (Geburtenregister) at a Standesamt (registry office) in Germany. There is no obligation to have a birth subsequently registered – properly issued foreign certificates are generally recognized in Germany. Subsequent registration in the birth register can nevertheless be advantageous, because the German Standesamt can then issue you a German birth certificate. Translations and certifications of the foreign certificate are then no longer needed in future. Registration in the Melderegister (register of residents) If you live in Germany and do not want to apply for registration in the German birth register, you must have the child's birth registered in the Melderegister (register of residents) at the Bürgeramt (citizens' office).

Requirements

• The child was born abroad At the time the application is submitted, the child is a German national. Or the child is stateless, a homeless foreigner (heimatloser Ausländer), or a recognized foreign refugee with habitual residence in Germany. • Entitlement to apply The child themselves, their parents, their spouse or civil partner, or their children are entitled to apply. • A residence in Germany exists or existed What is decisive is the child's residence in Germany (Inlandswohnsitz) at the time of application, or failing that, the residence in Germany of the applicant. If there is currently no residence in Germany, the last German residence is decisive. • Note: If neither the child nor the applicant has ever had a residence in Germany (including as a child), Standesamt I (Register Office I) in Berlin is responsible, and you need a different service. • Proof documents in original or as a certified copy Proof documents must be enclosed with the application in original or as a certified copy. Plain copies or electronically transmitted documents are unfortunately not sufficient. The Standesamt (register office) may require the originals to be presented for inspection.

Documents you need

• Application for Nachbeurkundung (subsequent registration of the birth in the German civil register) • Birth certificate of the child • Birth certificates of both parents • Marriage certificate of the child's parents, if applicable The marriage certificate is required if the child's mother was married at the time of the child's birth, or if the parents married before the application was submitted. The marriage certificate together with proof of its dissolution is also required if the mother's marriage was already dissolved at the time of the child's birth. • If applicable, proof of acknowledgment of paternity or judicial determination of paternity, and a Sorgeerklärung (declaration of joint parental custody) This proof is required if the parents are not married to each other and paternity has been established by acknowledgment or court decision. In certain cases, the mother's consent to the acknowledgment of paternity is also required. In some foreign countries, as well as in Germany, establishing joint parental custody also requires submission of a Sorgeerklärung (declaration of joint parental custody). • Personalausweise (identity cards) or passports of the child's parents, and of the applicant if applicable • Certified translation or Überbeglaubigung (further authentication) Documents in a foreign language generally require a certified German translation and, if applicable, further authentication (apostille or legalization). • Whether further documents are required depends on the individual case If the submission of further documents or proof is required, you will receive notification of this after processing has begun.
