Give notice of marriage - without international involvement

• German citizenship You both have held German citizenship since birth and were born in Germany. • Documents in the German language • If the required documents/certificates are not available in the German language, they must be translated by a translator sworn in in Germany (see "Further information"). • For some countries, an additional authentication (apostille or legalization) is required. The apostille (issued by the competent authority in the home country) or the legalization (issued by the German embassy) must be affixed directly to the original document or attached to it (more under "Further information"). • For certificates originally issued in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, or Cyrillic, the translation of personal names (such as first names, family names, and birth names) must be carried out in accordance with the transliteration standards (ISO 9-1995 / ISO 843 / DIN 31634 / ELOT 734 etc.). • Documents in original As a rule, all required documents/certificates must be submitted to the competent Standesamt (registry office) in original. Certificates may not be altered and/or perforated/laminated. • Deadline: 6 months validity Once you give notice of an intended marriage (Anmeldung einer Eheschließung), this notice is valid for 6 months. You may marry within this time window. After that, the marriage must be registered again. • Power of attorney for giving notice of marriage, if applicable If one partner is unable to attend, the other partner may give notice of the marriage alone. For this, the Standesamt requires the written power of attorney of the partner who is unable to attend. • Written notice of marriage, if applicable If both parties intending to marry are unable to appear at the Standesamt for an important reason, they may also give notice of the marriage in writing.

• Registering the marriage (Anmeldung der Eheschließung) at the Standesamt (registry office) You can register in person, either with both partners attending or with just one partner holding power of attorney, or you can register the marriage in writing by mail using the form. • Valid and signed identity card (Personalausweis) or passport of both partners • Extended certificate from the register of residents (erweiterte Bescheinigung aus dem Melderegister) / certificate of residence (Aufenthaltsbescheinigung) • Anyone whose main residence (Hauptwohnsitz) is in Berlin does not need to obtain this certificate themselves. The Standesamt obtains the required information independently. • Anyone whose main residence is outside Berlin is required to obtain this certificate themselves. When applying, point out to the responsible Bürgeramt (citizens' office) or Einwohneramt (residents' office) that the certificate must include marital status. This certificate is only required for the main residence, not for any secondary residences that may exist. On the day the marriage registration is applied for, it must not be older than 14 days. • Certified printout from the birth register (Geburtsregister) including the notes section You obtain the certified copy or certified printout from the birth register at the Standesamt of the place where you were born. The place must be in Germany. This is not the same as a birth certificate (Geburtsurkunde). • On the day of registration, the register entry must not be older than 6 months. • A birth register extract is issued current by the respective birth registry office. In Berlin, birth register extracts can be ordered online (see "Further information"). • If you have previously been married in Germany: certified copy of the marriage register (Eheregister) • Certified copy of the marriage register of the most recent marriage, with a note of dissolution, from the Standesamt of the place where the marriage took place, if you have previously been married in Germany. • Alternatively, you may also submit the marriage certificate (Eheurkunde) together with a legally final divorce decree. • If you are widowed: copy from the marriage register / civil partnership register (Lebenspartnerschaftsregister) with a note of dissolution Alternatively, you may also submit the marriage certificate / civil partnership certificate together with a death certificate of the former spouse/civil partner, or a certified copy from the register of declarations of death. • If you have previously entered a civil partnership (Lebenspartnerschaft) in Germany: certified copy from the civil partnership register (Lebenspartnerschaftsregister) • Certified copy from the civil partnership register of the most recent civil partnership, with a note of dissolution, from the Standesamt where your civil partnership was registered, if you have previously entered a civil partnership in Germany. • Alternatively, you may also submit the civil partnership certificate together with a legally final dissolution decree. • If you have previously entered a civil partnership abroad: civil partnership certificate and legally final dissolution decree • If you have previously been married abroad: marriage certificate and legally final divorce decree • If you have children together: birth certificates of the children • If you have children together: acknowledgement of paternity (Vaterschaftsanerkennung) and declaration of custody (Sorgerechtserklärung), if available • If applicable, proof of current name usage • If one partner is unable to attend: written power of attorney authorizing registration of the marriage • If applicable, further documents This list is not exhaustive. • 45.00 euros: registration of the marriage and examination of the marriage requirements The following can be added to this: • 40.00 euros: marriage at a different Standesamt (registry office) • 80.00 euros: marriage outside opening hours • 75.00 - 150.00 euros: marriage outside the registry office's premises or at a branch office of the Standesamt • 12.00 euros: marriage certificate in German • 12.00 euros: multilingual/international marriage certificate (Form B) • 6.00 euros: each additional certificate of the same kind issued at the same time Note: Additional costs may arise for special marriage venues.

The Standesamt (registry office) responsible is the one in the district where one of the partners has their main or secondary residence. If neither of you has a residence in Germany, the Standesamt where the marriage is to take place is responsible.
