Give notice of marriage - with foreign involvement

• Citizenship (Staatsangehörigkeit) At least one of you • holds a foreign citizenship, or • has been naturalised, or • was born abroad • Documents in German • If the required documents/certificates are not available in German, they must be translated by a translator sworn in (beeidigt) in Germany (see "Weiterführende Informationen" [further information]). • For some countries, additional authentication (apostille or legalisation) is also required. The apostille (issued by the competent authority in the home country) or the legalisation (issued by the German embassy) must be affixed directly to, or attached to, the original document (more under "Weiterführende Informationen" [further information]). • For certificates originally issued in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, or Cyrillic, the translation of personal names (such as first names, family names, birth names) must follow the transliteration standards (ISO 9-1995 / ISO 843 / DIN 31634 / ELOT 734, etc.). • Documents in original All required documents/certificates must generally be presented to the competent Standesamt (registry office) in their original form. Certificates must not be altered and/or perforated/laminated. • Deadline: valid for 6 months Once you register the intention to marry (Anmeldung einer Eheschließung), this registration is valid for 6 months. You may marry within this time window. After that, the marriage must be registered again. • Power of attorney for registering a marriage, if applicable If one partner is unable to attend, the other partner may register the marriage alone. The Standesamt (registry office) requires the written power of attorney of the partner who is unable to attend for this.

A personal consultation at your responsible Standesamt is required for this. • if applicable, sworn interpreter www.justiz-dolmetscher.de/Recherche/ If one of you does not have sufficient command of the German language, a sworn interpreter must be brought in. • if applicable, naturalization certificate (Einbürgerungsurkunde) If the naturalization certificate is available, please submit a copy to simplify the process. Otherwise, please wait for the appointment (Termin) at the Standesamt. • if applicable, proof of nationality (Staatsangehörigkeitsnachweis) or documents on legal status as a German without German citizenship under the Bundesvertriebenengesetz (Federal Expellees Act) (e.g. Registrierschein / Aufnahmebescheid / Bundesvertriebenenausweis / Namensänderungsurkunde) • if applicable, certified printout from the birth register with notes section • You have held German citizenship from birth but were born abroad. Your parents had the birth subsequently registered (nachbeurkundet) in Germany, meaning you hold a German birth certificate. In this case you must apply for the certified printout from the birth register with notes section at Standesamt I (registry office I) (see "Weiterführende Informationen" [further information]). • On the day of registration the register extract must be no older than 6 months. This is not a birth certificate. • if applicable, foreign birth certificate • You have held German citizenship from birth but were born abroad. Your parents did not have the birth subsequently registered in Germany, meaning you do not hold a German birth certificate. • If one partner is unable to attend: written power of attorney (Vollmacht) for registering the marriage • If both parties intending to marry are unable to attend: written registration of the marriage

• 45.00 euros: registration of the marriage (Anmeldung der Eheschließung) and examination of the marriage requirements The following may additionally apply: • 45.00 euros: per partner for whom foreign law must be taken into account • a fee, charged according to income, if exemption from providing the Ehefähigkeitszeugnis (certificate of no impediment to marriage) must be applied for from the Kammergericht (Court of Appeal) via the Standesamt (registry office) • additional costs for obtaining foreign certificates • 30.00 euros: statutory declaration in lieu of oath (Versicherung an Eides statt) • 40.00 euros: marriage at another Standesamt (registry office) • 80.00 euros: marriage outside office hours • 75.00 – 150.00 euros: marriage outside the official premises or at a Standesamt branch office • 12.00 euros: marriage certificate, German • 12.00 euros: multilingual/international marriage certificate (Formul B) • 6.00 euros: each additional certificate of the same type issued at the same time Note: Additional costs may arise from special marriage venues.

The Standesamt (registry office) responsible is the one in the district where one of the partners has their main or secondary residence. If neither of you has a residence in Germany, the Standesamt where the marriage is to take place is responsible.
