• The death occurred abroad. The deceased person held German citizenship. Or the deceased person was stateless, a heimatloser Ausländer (homeless foreigner under German law), or a recognized foreign refugee with habitual residence in Germany. • Right to apply The parents and children of the deceased person, as well as their spouse or registered civil partner (Lebenspartnerin/Lebenspartner), are entitled to apply. Other persons are entitled to apply if they can assert a legal interest. In addition, the German diplomatic mission (Auslandsvertretung) responsible for the place of death may also apply for the Nachbeurkundung (subsequent registration of the civil-status event). • A domestic residence exists or existed The deciding factor is the deceased person's last residence, or failing that, the applicant's domestic residence.
