Apply for a certificate of no impediment to marriage (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis)

• German citizenship At least one of you holds German citizenship. • You wish to marry abroad • Documents in German • If the required documents/certificates are not available in German, they must be translated by a translator sworn in in Germany (see "Further information"). • For some countries, a supplementary authentication (apostille or legalization) is also required. The apostille (issued by the competent authority in the home country) or the legalization (issued by the German embassy) must be affixed directly to the original or attached to it (more under "Further information"). • For certificates originally issued in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew or Cyrillic, the translation of personal names (such as first names, family names, birth names) must follow the transliteration standards (ISO 9-1995 / ISO 843 / DIN 31634 / ELOT 734 etc.). • Documents in original All required documents/certificates must generally be submitted to the competent Standesamt (registry office) in original. Documents must not be altered and/or perforated/laminated.

• Application for a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (Ehefähigkeitszeugnis) You can submit the application exclusively at the responsible Wohnsitzstandesamt (registry office of residence). You will receive the written application form from your responsible Standesamt (registry office). • Valid and signed identity card (Personalausweis) or passport of the persons intending to marry • Erweiterte Bescheinigung aus dem Melderegister (extended certificate from the register of residents) / certificate of residence • If your main residence is in Berlin, you do not need to obtain this certificate yourself. The Standesamt (registry office) will request the necessary information from the register of residents itself. • If your main residence is outside Berlin, you must obtain this certificate yourself. When applying, point out to the responsible Bürgeramt (citizens' office) or Einwohneramt (residents' office) that the certificate must include your marital status. This certificate is only required for the main residence, not for any secondary residences you may have. On the day the Ehefähigkeitszeugnis (certificate of no impediment to marriage) is applied for, the certificate must not have been issued more than 14 days earlier. • Certified printout from the register of births with explanatory note service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/318960/ You can obtain the certified copy or certified printout from the register of births from the Standesamt (registry office) in whose area of responsibility you were born. This must be located in Germany. On the day of registration, the document must not be older than 6 months. This is not a birth certificate (Geburtsurkunde). The printout from the register of births is issued by the Standesamt (registry office) that keeps the register. In Berlin, you can order these documents online. • Birth certificate (Geburtsurkunde) or multilingual birth certificate, if applicable if you were born abroad. • Certified extract from the marriage register, if applicable for the most recent marriage, with an annotation of dissolution, from the Standesamt (registry office) of the place where the marriage took place, if you have been married before in Germany. Alternatively, you may also submit the marriage certificate together with a final divorce judgment. • Extract from the marriage register with an annotation of dissolution, if applicable if you are widowed. Alternatively, you may submit the marriage certificate together with a death certificate of the former spouse/civil partner, or a certified extract from the register of declarations of death. • Certified extract from the register of civil partnerships, if applicable for the most recent civil partnership, with an annotation of dissolution, from the Standesamt (registry office) where your civil partnership was registered, if you have entered into a civil partnership before in Germany. The Standesamt (registry office) of the district in which you have your main or secondary residence is responsible. If you currently do not have a residence in Germany, the Standesamt in whose district you were last registered is responsible. If you have never had a residence in Germany, the Standesamt I in Berlin is responsible.
