Property - Applying for a property number/house number

Properties must be provided with property numbers to ensure orientation and quick location. They are indispensable during emergency operations for reasons of public safety and order (for police, fire brigade, rescue, and utility fault services). Property numbers must be continuously illuminated in darkness. Affixing illuminated property numbers is the obligation of property owners as well as persons with rights equivalent to property ownership (for example, Erbbaurecht [heritable building right] or Wohnungseigentum [condominium ownership]). The legal bases must be observed regarding the condition and manner of affixing. Improperly affixed property numbers constitute an Ordnungswidrigkeit (regulatory offense). Procedure 1. Submit an application to the responsible Vermessungsamt (surveying office) for the determination of a property number/house number. You can do this online. 2. The Vermessungsamt examines your application and, if necessary, conducts an oral, telephone, or written hearing procedure regarding the coordination of the property number. 3. The property number is then determined, taking your statement into consideration. You will receive a written Bescheid (notice) about the determination. 4. The responsible Vermessungsamt publishes the determination of the property number in the Amtsblatt von Berlin (Berlin Official Gazette).
