Civil partnership (Lebenspartnerschaft) abroad - applying for subsequent registration (Nachbeurkundung)

• The Lebenspartnerschaft (civil partnership) was established abroad. At least one of the partners must be a German national at the time the application is submitted. Alternatively, at least one of the partners is stateless, a heimatloser Ausländer (stateless foreigner without a homeland) or a recognized foreign refugee with habitual residence in Germany. • Eligibility to apply The partners are entitled to submit the application. If both partners are deceased, the application may also be submitted by their parents or children. • Domestic residence exists or existed The decisive factor is the domestic residence of at least one of the partners at the time the application is submitted, or failing that, the domestic residence of the applicant. If there is currently no domestic residence, the last German residence is decisive. • Note: If neither at least one of the partners nor the applicant has ever had a domestic residence (including as a child), the Standesamt I (Registry Office I) in Berlin is responsible and you will need a different service. • Documents in original or as certified copy Documents must be submitted with the application in original or as a certified copy. Simple copies or electronically transmitted documents are unfortunately not sufficient. The Standesamt (registry office) may require the originals to be presented for review.

• Application for Nachbeurkundung (subsequent registration) of a civil partnership concluded abroad • Lebenspartnerschaftsurkunde (civil partnership certificate) • Birth certificate or certified copy from the register of births for each partner Current certified copy from the register of births if born in Germany, or birth certificate if born abroad • Identity cards or passports of both partners • If applicable, certified copy of the marriage register or civil partnership register from the previous marriage or civil partnership Additionally required if either partner was previously married or in a civil partnership in Germany: • with a dissolution note from the Standesamt (registry office) that registered the previous marriage • or with a dissolution note from the Standesamt where the civil partnership was registered • If applicable, marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate and a final (legally binding) divorce decree, annulment decree, or death certificate Additionally required if either partner was previously married or in a civil partnership abroad. • If applicable, Einbürgerungsurkunde (certificate of naturalization) or Staatsangehörigkeitsausweis (certificate of nationality) Additionally required if documentary proof of German citizenship exists. • Certified translation or Überbeglaubigung (authentication) Documents in a foreign language generally require a certified German translation and, where applicable, authentication (Apostille or legalization). • Whether further documents are required depends on the individual case If the submission of further documents or proof is required, you will receive a corresponding notice once processing has begun.

The Standesamt (registry office) of your district of residence has responsibility (Zuständigkeit). If you currently have no residence in Germany, the Standesamt of your last German residence is responsible.
