Counselling for visually impaired people

The consultation is intended to help offset the difficulties caused by the disability in finding aids or means to compensate for the disability. If necessary, a current assessment of visual functions is carried out in order to provide an evaluation of existing social-law entitlements. The existing medical condition is explained where relevant and its significance for vision is discussed. • For infants and young children, an assessment is made of the risk of developmental impairment due to reduced vision. If necessary, contact is arranged with supportive institutions. Guidance is given for special care in Kita (daycare) and school. • Possible helpful optical or electronic magnifying visual aids as well as everyday aids are tested from an extensive pool and recommended in writing. • Aids are also selected for a visually-impaired-appropriate workplace setup, and a written recommendation is prepared. • We advise on career prospects, retraining, and reintegration. • Advice is given on applying for possible benefits and their usual cost bearers. • Social-law entitlements, including those regarding the Landespflegegeld (state care allowance) for severe visual impairment or blindness, are explained. Necessary applications are recorded.
