Apply for death abroad - first certification / first registration for German nationals without a domestic residence (ever)

• The death occurred abroad. • Residence abroad Neither had the deceased person been resident in Germany at the time of death, nor has the applicant ever been resident in Germany. • The deceased person was a German national. • Eligibility to apply Parents and children of the deceased person are eligible to apply, as well as their spouse or registered civil partner. Also eligible to apply is any other person who can assert a legal interest, as well as the German foreign missions (Auslandsvertretungen) in whose area of responsibility (Zuständigkeit) the death occurred. • Supporting documents must be enclosed with the application in the original or as a certified copy. Simple copies or electronically submitted documents are unfortunately not sufficient.

Standesamt I (Registry Office I) in Berlin is responsible if the deceased person had no residence in Germany at the time of death and the person submitting the application is also not resident in Germany at the time of application. If the deceased person was resident in Germany, responsibility lies with the Standesamt (registry office) of their last domestic residence. If the deceased person was not resident in Germany, the Standesamt (registry office) with local responsibility for the residence of the person submitting the application registers the death.
