Marriage abroad - apply for first certification / first registration for German nationals without a domestic residence (ever)

• The marriage was contracted abroad. • Residence abroad The spouses (Eheschließende) or the applicant have never had, and do not have, a residence in Germany (Inlandswohnsitz). • Eligibility to apply The spouses are entitled to apply; if both are deceased, their parents and children are also entitled to apply. • Evidence must be enclosed with the application in the original or as a certified copy. Simple copies or electronically submitted documents are unfortunately not sufficient.

• Application for registration of a marriage concluded abroad in the marriage register (§ 34 PStG [Personenstandsgesetz, Civil Status Act]) Please submit the application in writing by post. • Marriage certificate • Current certified copies from the birth register with the annotations section for both spouses If the birth was registered in a German birth register • Birth certificates of both spouses If the birth was registered exclusively abroad • Identity card (Personalausweis) or passport of the spouses • Evidence of all previous marriages or civil partnerships Evidence of all previous marriages / civil partnerships of the spouses (evidence of the marriage / establishment of the civil partnership and its dissolution) • Birth certificates of joint children • Documents in a foreign language Documents in a foreign language generally require translation and, where applicable, certification. • Whether further documents are required depends on the individual case. Should the submission of further documents or evidence be necessary, you will be notified accordingly once processing has begun.
