Bußgeldverfahren (fine proceedings) - surrender your driver's licence in the event of a driving ban

• For a first-time driving ban: surrender of the driving licence within 4 months (from the date of legal validity) If no driving ban was imposed on you in the two years before the administrative offence (Ordnungswidrigkeit) and up until the current fine decision (Bußgeldentscheidung), then the following applies: • The driving ban takes effect at the latest four months after the date of legal validity (14 days after service of the fine notice, Bußgeldbescheid). This means that within four months you may decide for yourself when to hand your driving licence over to an authority for official safekeeping, and from that point on you may no longer drive a motor vehicle. • For a repeated driving ban: immediate surrender of the driving licence (from the date of legal validity) If a driving ban has already been imposed on you within the past two years, then the following applies: • The new driving ban takes effect from the date of legal validity; this means that at the latest 14 days after service of the fine notice (Bußgeldbescheid) you must surrender your driving licence and must not drive a motor vehicle under any circumstances. • Place of residence • If you live in Berlin, you can hand in your driving licence at a police station (Polizeiabschnitt) (open 24 hours) or deposit it in the night letterbox at the Bußgeldstelle (fines office). • If you live outside Berlin, you can ask your local police station (Polizeidienststelle) whether it will take the driving licence into official safekeeping. If this option is not available at your local police station, the driving licence must be sent by post to the Bußgeldstelle (fines office).
