• Complete incapacity and long-term nature of the absence The appointment of a substitute (Vertreterin or Vertreter) is permissible only if and for as long as the notary (Notarin or Notar) is unable to perform the office as a whole. If the notary is unable to carry out only individual official duties, a substitute may not be appointed. The appointment of a notary's substitute (Notarvertreterin or Notarvertreter) must not compromise the principle of personal exercise of the office or result in a doubling of the notary's workload. • Right to apply The right to apply lies with the notary (Notarin or Notar) who wishes to be represented.
