Applying to marry while an existing civil partnership (Lebenspartnerschaft) is in place

• You are living in a registered civil partnership (eingetragene Lebenspartnerschaft) that was established in Germany before 01.10.2017 • Registration of the conversion and marriage ceremony Possible in person. The conversion must be registered at the Standesamt (registry office) of your place of residence. Afterward, the parties entering into marriage must personally declare their intention to marry (Ehewille) to the registrar, with both parties present at the same time • Documents in German • If the required documents/certificates are not available in German, they must be translated by a translator/interpreter sworn in in Germany (see "Weiterführende Informationen" [Further information]). • For some countries, additional supplementary certification (apostille or legalisation) is also required. The apostille (issued by the competent home authority in the home country) or the legalisation (issued by the German embassy) must be affixed directly to the original or attached to it (more under "Weiterführende Informationen" [Further information]). • For certificates originally issued in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew or Cyrillic, the translation of personal names (such as first and family names, birth names) must strictly follow the transliteration standards (ISO 9-1995 / ISO 843 / DIN 31634 / ELOT 734 etc.). • Documents in original In principle, all required documents/certificates must be presented to the competent Standesamt (registry office) in original. Certificates may not be altered and/or perforated/laminated. • Sworn interpreter, if applicable If the person making the declaration does not have sufficient command of the German language, an interpreter must be involved, arranged and paid for by that person.

• Valid and signed identity card or passport (original) of both registered civil partners (Lebenspartner/innen) • Current issued extract or copy from the register of civil partnerships (Lebenspartnerschaftsregister) You obtain this document from the registry office (Standesamt) at the place where your civil partnership was established. It must not be older than 6 months at the time of registration. Not required if the register of civil partnerships is kept at the registry office of your current place of residence. • Current certified extract or copy from the register of births (Geburtenregister), including the notes section You obtain this document from the registry office of your place of birth. It must not be older than 6 months at the time of registration. • Extended certificate from the register of residents (Melderegister) stating marital/civil status • Main residence in Berlin: in this case you do not need this certificate • Main residence outside Berlin: you must obtain this certificate yourself. When applying at the responsible citizens' office (Bürgeramt) or residents' registration office, point out that the certificate must include the marital/civil status. This certificate is required only from the main residence. (must not be older than 14 days on the day of registration) • if applicable, power of attorney for converting a civil partnership into a marriage if one of the two civil partners is unable to be present when the application is made. • The need for further documents depends on the individual case This list is not exhaustive. The conversion of a civil partnership (Lebenspartnerschaft) into a marriage must be registered with the Standesamt (registry office) of the main place of residence. The marriage ceremony itself can take place at any Standesamt within Germany.
