Apply for a research grant in Visual Arts

• Applications are possible from 26.01.2026 to 20.03.2026. The application deadline ends on 20.03.2026 at 11:00. Online applications must be received by 11:00. After 11:00 submission is no longer possible; transmissions already in progress will then be automatically cancelled. • You live and work in Berlin • Only one application per person is possible. • Applications are possible annually. Persons who last applied for the Recherchestipendium (research grant) 2024 may apply again. • You have completed an artistic education and/or can demonstrate several years of artistic/curatorial activity in the field of visual art • Presentation at venues of visual art Only visual artists and curators who can demonstrably present their work professionally at venues of visual art within exhibition contexts (museums, exhibition spaces, project spaces, etc.) are eligible for funding. • Main focus of work in visual art For artists or curators working across disciplines, the main focus of their work must lie in the field of visual art. • Application in German The application itself must be completed and submitted in German. The attachments may be in English. • You apply as an individual or as a group Applications from artistic or curatorial groups are possible. Groups that are newly formed solely for the purpose of submitting the application are eligible to apply. The group must confirm this joining together of artists or curators by means of a joint declaration. If a GbR contract (civil-law partnership agreement) already exists for the group, it must be submitted with the application. For groups, more than 50% of the group members must be registered with their primary residence (1. Wohnsitz) in Berlin (for a group of 2 people, this means both; for groups of 3 people, at least 2; etc.). • Double funding/simultaneous funding or grants • An application for the Recherchestipendium is possible even if you have applied for other grants. However, you must notify us if you receive an offer of another grant, so that it can be checked whether the two are combinable. • Combinations with project funding are permitted. Funding is generally excluded if the artists have already received a grant from the Stiftung Kunstfonds (arts fund foundation) for the funding year. • The Recherchestipendium can be freely combined with other grants from domestic and foreign funders not named here. In this case, please be sure to find out whether the funding conditions of the other grant exclude simultaneous acceptance. • No enrolment or teaching position as professor at a university Applicants must not be enrolled at a university (including with the aim of obtaining a doctorate) or employed as a professor at a university, at the time of application and during the funding period.

• Application for funding through the Recherchestipendium Bildende Kunst (Research Grant for Visual Arts) You may only submit the application online. • Please have all required documents and evidence ready for upload in PDF format. • Artistic CV with portfolio (max. 10 MB, PDF file, max. 10 A4 pages) • In this combined file (preferably in landscape format), the portfolio section should present photos or other visual material of completed works/exhibitions etc. For film and video material, the portfolio should include stills and a brief description of the work, including working links (Vimeo or similar). • Please focus on works from the last three years. For the CV section, please include scholarships, awards, and a list of exhibitions and group exhibition participations. For group applications, the CVs must be combined into a single file. The maximum page count of 10 A4 pages also applies to group applications. • Artistic CVs with portfolios totaling more than 10 A4 pages will not be accepted. A cover sheet is not required. Please also note that the file must contain both a CV section and a portfolio section. In the interest of equal treatment of all applicants, an application not meeting this requirement may be formally excluded. • Proof of identity and proof of main residence in Berlin with a specific registered address • a copy of both sides of the Personalausweis (identity card), if it contains your registered address, or • a copy of the relevant page from your passport or substitute passport document plus a Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) (if applicable, for all group members), or a copy of the registration confirmation from the Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office) (Bürgeramt, citizens' office) • For non-EU citizens, additionally: a copy of the Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit) or the certificate confirming the right of residence (if not included in the passport). • Only for group applications: GbR (civil law partnership) agreement, if a GbR already exists, OR a declaration of association of artists or curators signed by all group members The declaration must be signed, if applicable, by all participating applicants — as must proof of the registered address of all group members. If a GbR agreement already exists, please submit a copy of it.
