Apply for a scholarship for translators in the field of literature

• Applications are possible from 09.12.2025 to 03.03.2026 The application deadline ends on 03.03.2026 at 11:00 a.m. Online applications must be received by 11:00 a.m. After 11:00 a.m. submission is no longer possible; any transmission already in progress will then be automatically aborted. • Only one application per person is possible • You live and work in Berlin • You are a professional translator You must have at least two published literary translations (not self-published). • The work to be translated must be published Authorship and freedom from rights encumbrances must be clarified in advance. Translation projects whose publication is already excluded for copyright reasons cannot be funded. Corresponding proof of permission to use the original work must be issued by the rights holders. If the work is in the public domain, this must be confirmed. • Application in German The application itself must be completed and submitted in German. The attachments may be in English. • You are applying as an individual person A Stipendium (scholarship/grant) is a person-related form of funding, so only natural persons may apply. Applications from groups/GbR (civil-law partnerships) are not possible. • Double funding/concurrent funding or scholarships • The Stipendium for Berlin translators cannot be combined with a translation Stipendium awarded by the federal government through the Deutscher Übersetzerfonds (German Translators' Fund) for the same funding period. • An application for the Stipendium is possible even if you have applied for other scholarships (except the Deutscher Übersetzerfonds). However, you must notify us if you receive a commitment for another scholarship, so that it can be checked whether the two are combinable. • The Stipendium can be combined with other scholarships from the Land Berlin (State of Berlin) up to a total of 24,000 euros per year. • The Stipendium can be freely combined with other scholarships from funders not named here, domestic or foreign. In this case, please be sure to find out whether the funding conditions of the other scholarship exclude simultaneous acceptance. • Combinations with project funding are permitted. • No enrollment or teaching activity as a professor at a university • At the time of application, applicants must not be enrolled at a university (including with the aim of obtaining a doctorate) or working as a professor at a university. • If your studies were completed only a short time ago, this completion must be documented without being requested to do so (please attach the certificate to your CV).

Application for funding through the Scholarship for Translators (Stipendium für Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer) Only possible online. Please have all required documents and evidence ready to upload in PDF format. • Curriculum vitae (CV) (max. 2 MB, PDF file) including a list with title, place of publication and medium of the most recent translations • Translation sample (max. 5 MB, PDF file, max. 5 DIN A4 pages) Note: The "Translation sample" attachment with a length of more than 5 DIN A4 pages (including cover sheets, bibliographies, illustrations, other documents) will not be accepted. The corresponding application will be formally excluded in the interest of equal treatment of all applicants. • Copy of the translated passage (max. 5 MB, PDF file) • Synopsis (Exposé) (max. 2 MB, PDF file, max. 2 DIN A4 pages) (German or English) • Characteristics of the original work and the author, • Justification of the relevance of a translation, • Description of the challenges involved in the translation, • Scope of the original work and of the translation (page count), • Information on the current stage of progress of the translation, • planned publication date (if already known), • source and target languages of the translation Note: The "Synopsis" attachment with a length of more than 2 DIN A4 pages (including cover sheets, bibliographies, illustrations, other documents) will not be accepted. The corresponding application will be formally excluded in the interest of equal treatment of all applicants. • Information on the rights clearance/permission to use the original work (max. 2 MB, PDF file) Applicants must provide information on the rights clearance or permission to use the original work. This can take the form of an existing contract with the rights holder or with a publishing house. If no contract has been concluded, the Formular Rechtefreiheit (rights clearance form) must be completed by the rights holder. If the work is in the public domain, this must be confirmed using the Formular Gemeinfreiheit (public domain form) (see the funding program's website). • Proof of Berlin address and of the residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) • Citizens with German citizenship: copy of the valid Personalausweis (identity card) (front and back). • Citizens from EU countries: copy of the valid identity card or passport and copy of the Meldebestätigung (registration confirmation) from the Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office). • Citizens from non-EU countries with an Aufenthaltstitelkarte (residence permit card): The Aufenthaltstitelkarte counts as an identity document and as a registration confirmation. Please upload the relevant page showing the Berlin address. • Citizens from non-EU countries without an Aufenthaltstitelkarte: copy of the valid identity card or passport and copy of the registration confirmation from the Einwohnermeldeamt and copy of the valid Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit) or the certificate of right of residence (front and back). Note: If no valid residence permit is held during the period of the application and the scholarship, no scholarship will be granted.
