Apply for an electronic institution card (SMC-B) as an institution with employees in health care professions

The SMC-B (Security Module Card Type B) is an electronic institution card and electronic institution ID in one. It gives people working in healthcare professions at an institution access to the Telematikinfrastruktur (telematics infrastructure, TI). The TI connects all parties in the healthcare system and will in future make it possible, for example, to access the elektronische Patientenakte (electronic patient record, ePA). There are different SMC-B cards for different professional groups. There is an SMC-B for medical practices, for nursing, midwifery and physiotherapy facilities, and for pharmacies. Procedure 1. To apply for an SMC-B as an institution with staff in healthcare professions, you must first apply for the right to hold the card at the elektronisches Gesundheitsberuferegister (electronic register of healthcare professions, eGBR). You can do this online. 2. After your application is received, it is reviewed. 3. Pay the Verwaltungsgebühr (administrative fee). 4. Once the review is complete, you will receive an email with the results of the review and your case number (Vorgangsnummer). 5. Using the case number, you order an SMC-B (Security Module Card Type B), for a fee, from a Vertrauensdiensteanbieter (trust service provider, VDA) of your choice. Trust service providers are approved providers of digital certificates that can be used, for example, to create electronic signatures or carry out authentication (more information in the eGBR FAQ under "Further information").
