Calculating means of subsistence for residence permits or naturalizations

If you would like to apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) or naturalization and do not hold German citizenship, you must generally, as a precondition, secure your living costs independently. If you do not know whether you have sufficient income, you can use a "Lebensunterhaltsberechnung" (calculation of living-cost coverage) as a free and non-binding advisory service (Quick-Check). Independently secured living costs means that you can permanently pay for the costs of housing, food, clothing, personal needs and health insurance yourself, from your own regular income. Living costs are not considered independently secured if public funds such as Bürgergeld (basic income support for jobseekers), Sozialhilfe (social assistance) or Asylbewerberleistungen (benefits for asylum seekers) are received, or if there is an entitlement to them. Process 1. Please use the "Lebensunterhaltsberechnung" (calculation of living-cost coverage) before applying for a residence permit or naturalization. • The data you enter is not stored and is not forwarded to the Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA, State Office for Immigration). • The calculation of living costs also takes into account partners you live together with, and children up to the age of 24. 2. The check of your living-cost coverage is carried out online. You receive a result immediately. 3. You can then apply for a residence permit or naturalization.
