Applying for a residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) for the minor child of a German citizen

• The child is a minor, unmarried, and does not hold German citizenship • At least one parent holds German citizenship and lives with the child as a family unit • No grounds for expulsion (Ausweisungsinteresse) • Even fines or an ongoing investigation can prevent the residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) from being granted. • The child does not pose a threat to the free democratic basic order or the security of the Federal Republic of Germany. • The child is not involved in acts of violence in pursuit of political or religious goals, does not publicly call for the use of violence, and does not threaten to do so. • Main residence in Berlin A secondary residence in Berlin is not sufficient. • Current email address The Landesamt für Einwanderung (State Office for Immigration) will get in touch using the German parent's current email address. • Application for the issuance of a residence permit on family grounds • online only • You will receive a PDF document confirming your application. This certifies that the child's current residence permit remains valid within the federal territory beyond its previous expiry date. This does not apply if the child holds a Schengen visa (C visa) for a short-term stay, or if the current residence permit has already expired on the date the application is submitted. • Please be sure to save this document and, if possible, also print it out. • If the application is submitted by an authorized representative: power of attorney stating the subject of the proceedings • If the application is submitted by the parents: documents relating to the persons with custody • if a parent with sole custody submits the application: copy of the passport or Personalausweis (identity card) of the parent with sole custody • if the parents have joint custody, additionally: a signed declaration of consent as well as a copy of the passport or Personalausweis of the other parent with custody • If the child already holds a residence permit or another German residence title for the federal territory: copy of the residence title • Copies of the passport (in colour) • Copies of the following pages of the passport are required: • always: the data pages (with your photo and personal details) • if the child has entered the country and is applying for a residence permit for the first time, additionally: entry stamp as well as the visa for entry or a residence title of another EU state in the passport (if available) • Birth certificate • If the child is of compulsory school age: current school certificate • If receiving benefits under SGB II or SGB XII (German Social Code Book II or XII) or the Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz (Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act): most recent notice of approval

• 28,00 euros: for the first-time issuance of the residence permit as a sticker • 24,50 euros: for the extension of the residence permit as a sticker • 50,00 euros: for the first-time issuance of the residence permit as an electronic residence permit • 46,50 euros for the extension of the residence permit as an electronic residence permit • 27,60 euros: for Turkish citizens (both for the first issuance and for the extension) • No fees: foreign nationals who cannot cover their living expenses without benefits under SGB II or XII or the Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz are exempt from the fees. A current notice from the Jobcenter (job center) or Sozialamt (social welfare office) must be presented as proof. • 6,00 euros additional: for creating a digital passport photo at the self-service terminal on site

After the appointment, it takes at least 4 weeks until the residence permit is issued as an electronic residence permit and can be collected.
